ART AND IDENTITY CONSUME DURHAM REGION

Oshawa, ONT— The Robert McLaughlin Gallery presents the exhibition: William Atkinson, Gertrude Spurr Cutts and Florence McGillivray: Art and Identity in the Region of Durham on view form 30 April – 26 October 2009

William Atkinson (1862-1926), Gertrude Spurr Cutts (1858-1941) and Florence McGillivray (1864-1938) are painters who have achieved recognition in Canadian art. Each has a secure artistic reputation though all three approached their medium in different ways.

The literature on all three artists is slight and no one has yet compared their experiences as artist in search of authentic professional and personal identities. The innovative aspect of this project lies in its effort build associations of idea, through gathering and juxtaposing a wide range of works. It differs from most existing studies by examining identity issues as they relate to nationality, nature, gender, creativity, and the construction of a personal mythology.

Atkinson, Cutts and McGillivray each were rooted in a part of North America and invested the image of that place in their art. This show probes the unique, sometimes conflicted identities developed within lives imprinted with integrity.
