Lindy Fyfe: Confluence

The art of Lindy Fyfe cannot be easily summed up in a string of sentences. Per­haps this is because in style and theory it is more a visual poem than a written nar­rative. If one thinks about it in a poetic way, there are concepts and experiences that effortlessly spring to mind. Fyfe’s artwork offers an opulent visual feast for thoughtful contemplation.

 It is possible to draw comparisons to the Op-Art movement, which flooded the eyes and senses, but Fyfe’s work finds no real direct home within the constraints of style. Fyfe’s work is intuitive, explorative and unique in approach.

When viewing these visual playgrounds one will become engaged in the work with­out being prompted to find similarities be­tween it and the real world. Fyfe’s purely intuitive explorations are free from the need to make sense — it is poetic in that it enables the viewer to grasp thoughts and meaning directly — but leaves them with the exciting question of what it is exactly they are looking at, what it is they are left feeling.

Fyfe describes her own work as “…an intuitive investigation of colour, materi­als and movement,” while she highlights that her own “improvisation is […] an important element.”

In this exhibition, you are surrounded by the expressive intent of the artist, and her investigations and explorations. But you also bring with you your memories, your associations to shape and colour, and subconscious ideas about line and move­ment. It is these encounters in particu­lar that bring the most meaning to the RMG’s upcoming exhibition Lindy Fyfe: Confluence.  Curated by David Aurandt.
