Hardwired for Narrative
Celebrated Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood once said that "people are storytellers, we're hardwired to do so."
Whether through science, art or religion, there are fundamental questions that are the foundation of narrative: "Where did we come from?", "What are we doing here?" and "Where are we going?" Whether the works in this new exhibition, selected from the RMG's permanent collection, answer those questions is up to the narrative the viewer imposes on the image.
While the means of storytelling has changed from verbal interchanges around a fire to text messaging, msn-ing and tweets, at the heart of communication are stories shared. Images of the land inform us of travel and adventure while the human form in paintings, sculpture, drawing or photography is either specific or general. Who are the people portrayed, and what is their story?
On now in the Permanent Collection Gallery.
