Fierce: Women's Hot Blooded Film/Video
2 July - 25 August, 2011
Fierce; as in corageous, spirited, daring, tenacious, audacious, guts, heart. Fierce; s in stirring, forceful, strong, ardent. Fierce; as in furious, untamed, wild, ferocious. Fierce; as in excitable, passionate, raw. Fierce: Women's Hot-Blooded Film and Video brings together experimental video and film work by four Canadian artists; Maureen Bradley, Dana Claxton, Allyson Mitchell and b.h. Yael.
Fierce takes a stand and asks what is at stake. It does not shy away from difficult questions or issues but instead presents works that are both inviting and created with disturbing intensity. An interrogation of social and cultural relations of power, territories of land and body, the works by these four artists are hot-headed, hot-blooded, tempestuous and simmering. Geopolitics, sexuality, aboriginal rights, feminism, culture, relations of power are each addressed in this exhibition, one that asks of the spectator to feel and understand some responsibility with their participation. The interplay of the works focuses on the fierceness of the artist's personal and political creations, their urgency, their passion, their unique vision.
Ranging from luminious abstraction to hard-hitting realism, the visual experiences collide and connect with intensity resonating with disquiet and delight. Presented in collaboration with the McMaster Museum of Art. Curated by Janice Hladki.
